Local High School Students Connect with Area Employers During Construction Career Day Events

Apr 20, 2022 | News

The demand for workers in the construction trades continues to grow, impacting organizations, progress, and consumers. The York Builders Association (YBA) is committed to spreading awareness about the tremendous career opportunities available locally through events like Construction Career Days.

Now in its third year, YBA’s 2022 Construction Career Day events took place over several days and included seven host companies, 11 area high schools, and homeschooled students. Approximately 70 students participated.

Schools and students were matched with area employers in the construction industry. Students had an opportunity to learn about the range of career paths at each company, see first-hand the kind of work they do and meet and speak with individuals in various roles. All students participating in Construction Career Day events also received details on connecting with the company in the future when they are ready to look for employment opportunities.

“The lack of skilled workers in the construction trades is a big challenge,” said YBA Executive Vice President Laurie Lourie. “Events like Construction Career Days allow us to introduce employers to potential employees and educate students about the many opportunities the skilled trades offer for long-term, sustainable careers. These visits can be eye-opening as students learn that there are a variety of roles within each company that they might not otherwise have an opportunity to get familiar with, many of which offer apprenticeships and paid on-the-job training.”

John Royer, Drafting & Design/Construction Trades Teacher at Red Lion Area Senior High School said this about YBA’s 2022 Construction Career Days, “Once again, you have created an amazing career day for our students! Thank you for dedicating your time and energy to presenting the trades to students. The students talked the whole way back to school about how much they enjoyed the experience! I wouldn’t doubt a few students showing back up with an application in the future.”
